Least-squares regression on log price gives each name a compounding rate and an R-squared, drawn as a small multiple with the fitted line dashed over the price. Two names up the same 30% can be a straight line or a round trip through a 40% drawdown, and the return alone cannot tell them apart. Flags anything that moved a long way with an R-squared under 40%: the return is real, the trend is not, and anything betting on continuation has less to work with than the headline suggests.
