A dog. You poke it, it barks, and it feels something new about you. Sixteen moods, and it will never hand you the same one twice in a row: delighted, winking, furious at the postman, heartbroken that you put your shoes on, curious, fast asleep, unhinged about a car ride, suspicious that you smell like another dog, mid play-bow, confused that the ball went behind the sofa, very proud of a hole it dug, alarmed by the vacuum, in love because you came back, goofy, guilty about the kitchen, and starving four minutes after dinner. Each mood changes the ears, brows, eyes, mouth, tongue, tail speed, body bounce and head tilt, and brings its own floating decoration — hearts, anger marks, question marks, sparkles, a sweat drop, a drifting z. Each one also barks differently: a proper two-syllable woof, a high yip, a low growl with vibrato, a rising whine, or a snore. Every bark is transcribed into a twelve-character code that scrambles and locks into place one character at a time. Nothing here was loaded from anywhere. The puppy is drawn from arcs and beziers on a canvas every frame rather than from a sprite, and every sound is built live out of oscillators and filtered noise, because the app sandbox has no network to fetch a picture or an audio file through. It weighs less than a single photograph.
